Breaking The Bias

Through flashy billboards, cheesy slogans and caleidoscopic visuals, Breaking the Bias demands attention for the prejudices and myths surrounding Bi+* sexuality.

In our arguably tolerant Dutch culture, queer people (thankfully) enjoy the same basic rights as their straight counterparts. Nevertheless, heterosexuality is still considered to be the norm - with homosexuality as the logical other. Which ultimately restricts people from expressing their gender or sexual identity beyond the binary. Consequently, Bi+ people today are still faced with an array of Bi-phobic or Bi-erasing assumptions from both queer and straight spaces: Bias, if you will.

Aiming to break this bias, visual artist Gerdien van Halteren, better known as GARY, balanced personal anecdotes with academic research and and an uplifting sense of humour.
The result is an audiovisual installation in which several prejudices are exposed.
In a positive way, with a playful wink.
Breaking the Bias informs, represents and celebrates the nuanced spectrum of sexual identity.

*Bi+ is an umbrella term for all that feel attraction to more than one gender. This includes, but is not limited to: Bi-sexuality, pan-sexuality, poly-sexuality, omni-sexuality and queer.
