"Mother Tongue" is a solo dance research by Alesya Dobysh.
In 2020, during the global lockdown, a solitary research journey started in a small 2x2 room. Here, the 10-minute work, "Stop Making Sense", was created. This piece drew inspiration from the falling images in Robert Longo's "Men in the City" photo series.
Alesya, the choreographer of the piece, began to deconstruct her dance background, which was heavily influenced by house dance - footwork-oriented club styles. She used this material to redefine her physicality in connection to gravity, the main shaping force.
At 34, four years later, Alesya revisits her research. Unexpectedly, she's driven to delve into her identity, clouded by immigration experiences, feelings of alienation, and shame. Rather than avoiding these facets of her Self, she starts an inward journey, a pursuit to understand who she truly is beneath the layers that life has layered on.
